Three Most Common Problems With AC Units

Posted on

When they're working perfectly, air conditioning units barely even let you know they're there. They might hum once they kick on and pass a gentle breeze by you when you go in front of the vents, but they're largely silent machines that operate efficiently and independently.

Until, that is, they decide to go out.

An air conditioning unit that decides to fail completely, especially during those hot summer months, is one of the most frustrating and inconvenient things a homeowner can go through. Fortunately, most of the problems associated with AC units are very common, which makes diagnosing and completing an air conditioning repair much simpler.

No Air at All

By far, this is the most obvious sign that something is wrong with your AC unit and will most likely be predated by several other signs first. If you haven't noticed an issue before now though, an AC unit that is not blowing any cold air at all is definitely a sign that something is wrong. The most likely culprits range from a tripped breaker. which is relatively easy to fix, or damaged wiring, which requires an HVAC technician to perform a professional air conditioning repair.

No Cold Air

If your air conditioner is blowing air, but it's just not cold, it's most likely a problem with condensor coils. These little devices are responsible for transferring the hot air (which are required to operate efficiently) into cold air. If they're not maintained properly, they can actually freeze and keep the unit from blowing out cold air into your house. Another possible solution? Your thermostat is set too high. It sounds simple, but it's surprising how many people call an HVAC company to schedule an AC repair when the solution is as easy as that.

Weird Smells and Noises

Air conditioning units aren't supposed to be intrusive into your everyday life, so weird smells radiating through your house and noises keeping you up at night are not normal. The noises could be indicative of a broken motor or something as simple as a bolt that has fallen off your unit and clanging around, while weird smells could be mold or leaky antifreeze. Regardless, you'll need to hire an HVAC contractor to perform an air conditioning repair on your unit and nail down the cause of the issue. If left unchecked, it could damage your home's ductwork or even cause health problems to everyone living underneath your roof.
